Hearth at Vulture

A favorite site of Kesel’s for opportunities to capture wonderful pieces of Southwestern history is Vulture Mine near Wickenburg, Arizona. By rising well before dawn, Kesel was able to get to the site just after sunrise. This shot of the old hearth in the assay office was taken early one morning while the light was low and warm.  The Hearth featured in this photograph is where prospectors brought in their samples of gold ore to be melted down, determining the value of their strkes. Over 200 million dollars in gold and silver were taken out of Vulture Mine between the late 1800s and 1942, when the mine was closed..
